The most defining characteristic of clownfish is their symbiotic relationship with some species of anemones.
In the wild, clownfish are always found close from their home anemone.
There are only a few different species of anemones which clownfish prefer to live with :
cryptodendrum adhaesivum
entacmaea quadricolor
heteractis aurora
heteractis crispa
heteractis magnifica
heteractis malu
macrodactyla doreensis
stichodactyla gigantean
stichodactyla haddoni
stichodactyla mertensii
Each clownfish type prefers some particular types of anemones.
